Celebrating Juneteenth: Honoring the Legacy of the First Black Woman Doctor and Local Events in King of Prussia, PA

Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19th, marks the day in 1865 when the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, learned of their freedom—over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. This day not only commemorates the end of slavery in the United States but also celebrates African American culture, achievements, and contributions. At Medically Fab, a Black-owned esthetician company, we are proud to honor this significant day and reflect on the remarkable individuals who have paved the way for future generations. This year, we shine a light on Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler, the first Black woman doctor in the United States, and highlight some exciting Juneteenth events happening in the King of Prussia, PA area.

Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler: A Trailblazer in Medicine

Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler was born in 1831 in Delaware and raised in Pennsylvania by her aunt, who was known for caring for the sick. Inspired by her aunt’s compassion and dedication, Crumpler pursued a career in medicine—a bold and challenging path for an African American woman during that era.

In 1864, she graduated from the New England Female Medical College, becoming the first Black woman in the United States to earn a medical degree. Dr. Crumpler dedicated her life to providing medical care to underserved communities, particularly focusing on women and children. After the Civil War, she moved to Richmond, Virginia, where she worked with the Freedmen’s Bureau, providing crucial healthcare to formerly enslaved people who had limited access to medical services.

Dr. Crumpler’s groundbreaking achievements and unwavering commitment to healthcare paved the way for future generations of Black women in medicine. Her legacy continues to inspire us at Medically Fab, where we are dedicated to promoting wellness and beauty within our community.
